01 AUTUMN LEAVES  07:25

Change. How often do we change? Are we even capable of change?  Do we always change for the better? What makes a person change for the worse?  Do you always count your change at the supermarket? How many times have we seen traffic lights change? How often do we change lanes? Or what about our phone numbers? Address? Emails? How often do we change jobs?  How often do we change partners? Or cities? Even countries?  What about our clothes?  How many times have you changed trains?  Or changed planes?  Or buses?  How often do the rules change? Do we change our attitudes? What makes us change our minds? Or Have a change of heart? Why do we change our names? Lots of changing.

02 The CONJURATION 06:03

A dream.  Africa. A lion lounges under a tree.  In the distance, giraffes. The heat causes the air to flimmer. Somewhere nearby an ape cries. Something rustles. I turn around and find myself staring into the eyes of a leopard. She’s cowering on a branch above me. „When a wild animal fixes its eyes on you, never turn away.” I put all in my strength into holding her stare. Suddenly, the leopard jumps down behind the tree.  I feel numb. She then emerges. Stops. Stares. I stand motionless, breathless. Wake up! The leopard stalks toward me. This is it, I think. Then, to my astonishment, the leopard walks past within a foot of where I’m standing.  I can wake up now.

03 YESTERDAY  06:00

Driving down the I-5 straight west out of Chicago makes Sam nostalgic. He used to drive this highway a lot. But it’s changed now. It’s full of shopping malls, car dealers and huge, expensive movie complexes with over-salted popcorn and flat coke. He longs for the way it used to be. The flat frozen tundra of a mid-west winter lit up by the moonlight reflecting off the snow. Impossible to think that winter melts into spring. The season of hope. The farmers out in their tractors. And then the corn crops of summer followed by the harvest. Oh, well, he thought. He pulled into the parking lot. Without yesterday, there would be no today, with no today there is no tomorrow.

04 SEDUCTION 06:01

It looks like a picture from an old spy movie. Our man in South America. Cruising down the coast in an American old-timer. More boat than car.  On the left – a view of the sea.  To the right, the silhouette of the fast changing city.  Samba sounds blend with the purring engine. As twilight approaches, lights go on and the last rays of sunshine bounce off the glass facades of the skyscrapers. Down wide boulevards, past jazz clubs and ritzy bars, we arrive at our hotel. We head straight for the pool and can’t believe our eyes.  The place is full of people dancing around the pool to an incredible band. Tropical drinks. Palm trees. I look up to the heavens. We have arrived!

05 IDENTIFY 04:50

To connect, associate or involve closely. To make identification of oneself with someone else. To put yourself in another’s place, so as to understand and share the other’s thoughts, feelings, problems. To identify one’s interests with another’s.  Sympathize. Identify. Not good-bye. Identify. Heavy sigh. Identify. See the light. Identify. It’s all right. Identify. Money’s tight. Identify. Read my mind. Identify. Hear the night. Identify. Do it right. Identify. Touch the sky. Identify. Hopes are high. Identify. Fly a kite. Identify. Gotta try. Identify. Don’t lie. Identify. Could you imagine trying to count the grains in a handful of sand? What a stupid thought. Identify.

06 AFTER THE STORM  06:01

A south sea island in the Indian Ocean. Early afternoon. We’re sitting under the palm trees staring at the beach stretched out before us.  The wind has let up and the storm is fading now. Still, raindrops fall from the leaves above us. The scent of wood and exotic spices mix with the salt of the surf in the air. Way out on the horizon a ray of sunshine is breaking through the low hanging clouds. It hits the waves and the water glitters in shades of gold. The far off sound of thunder blends with the voices of a children’s choir in the distance. A place of stillness. Time is motionless and touchable. We hold it gently in our hands.  I lean back in the sand and drift away.

07 LIGHTNING  06:40

The city is a desert. Dark. Cool. Mysterious. Silent but not sleeping. A chance meeting on a lonely street late at night. A discharge of atmospheric electricity from one person to another. A flash of light. Is seeing really believing? Or is it just an optical illusion? A charge so mighty, so powerful it lights up the skyscrapers of Manhattan. Suddenly the city comes alive with energy. And there they stand. Two strangers oblivious to the racing pulse of a metropolis at night. Caught off guard by destiny.  A slow smile of recognition. They fall into each others arms and head down the street to the nearest bar. They suddenly find themselves in need of a good, long drink.

08 ANGEL EYES 05:07

Paula rushes up the stairs to the platform. She barely makes it through the closing doors and breaks the heel on her shoe as she jumps on the train. The smell of  newspaper print, coffee and perfumed deodorant hang in the air. Good Morning Monday. Looking out the window she wonders about the lives of the people who live in all those apartments whizzing by. What are they like? Or do they look at the train and wonder about us? It seems strange that she has never once seen anybody in any of the windows she passes. She turns away. A fellow passenger coming down the aisle gives her a smile.  She smiles back and leans back into her seat. The day is saved. Maybe even the week

09 MAURITIUS 05:59

The soft sand gives way gently under my feet as I wade further into the water.  The surf crashes against me. A big wave gathers strength before me. Foam covers my face and I can taste the salt on my tongue. An odd sense of comfort washes over me. I climb into the boat and we speed toward the coral reef. Although we are holding on, we bounce like ping pong balls in our seats. I look back to see the fading coastline of green sugar cane. We arrive at the coral reef. The first moment underwater and I am surrounded by what seems likes a thousand fish. In a split second they flit apart. The sun breaks through the water’s surface and the fish shine like an underwater rainbow.

10 SATISFACTION 06:00

How do you usually feel when you wake up in the morning? Does it make a difference if the sun is shining or not? Think about that feeling you get when you clean out a drawer, better yet, a closet. Or what about putting all those old photographs in a photo album. That’s a good one. Did you ever think about putting all your CD’s in alphabetical order? Don’t do the books, that would be anal. Try really sending postcards on vacation. Or just having a cup coffee and feeling good.  Do something nice for someone else. Nothing more than a  good feeling at the end of the day when you think you have accomplished something.  It shouldn’t be that hard  so what’s our problem?

11 SOLAR PHASE 06:05

Give to those who are good to you. The wheel of Karma will bring the good you give back again. The wheel of Karma. Where does it start and where does it stop? How fast does it turn. A solar phase or a sidereal year? Humanity reaches for the stars, technology is developing faster than ever, but the simple things in life stay the same. Nothing  is possible without them. Air, water, earth and sunshine. We take advantage of what is actually a gift. So between the fancy cars, baby food, cigarettes, lipsticks, the stock market and domestic garbage and between life and death, hiring and firing, first love and last honors, isn’t there a moment to stop and appreciate this gift?

12 NORTH GATE 680 06:06

Imagine. What would happen if you walked out of your house, got in your car and drove north? Just north, straight ahead, always north. The city fading in the distance behind you. Past the farmers and their fields. Down the rivers and across the mountains. Through the forests. Radio on with the windows down and the smell of summer spurring you on.  You’re driving further and further away. The highway opens up before you. Nothing ahead and nothing behind. Think about it. Where would you stop along the way?  And why? Where would you end up? Would you be different when you got there? Go not west young man, go north! Not all roads lead to home. Don’t stop until you get there.
